Spring cleaning the Mind Palace
40, blossoming, nurturing the roots
On the 11th day of Spring, I turned 40 years old. My friends have asked me, “How does it feel?” and I’d reply, “Not so different,” then pause and say, “I’m more self-assured now.”
Making it to an age that I wasn’t sure I would see, has brought clarity to how I live and the work that I do. I can wrap my arms around the spirit of my life and breathe deeply into her. I can give her permission to remove her shackles and sprint forward, towards her fear, laughing, with bravery and focus.
A prayer for renewal. A promise that sounds like a spell.
Getting older is a blessing.
This morning on The Lot Radio, at 10am EST, the music of emergence on Deep Exposure.
Today will feature spatially emotive, articulately nostalgic, revisionist and canonical shoegaze.
These songs wipe away the dust with their gritty wash of atmosphere and soapy, acerbic emotions. Shoegaze is a broad tag for the music that I intend to present. I prefer penetrative questions that can lead us to more personal descriptors.
What does the wash and balance of these sounds bring to mind?
What memories do they lay bare?
Old enough to see the span of this cultural practice over several decades, what is left to say with reverb, delay, and chorus?
The resounding, pungent chime of the cum trees in bloom.
A single day of pleasant warmth, followed by damp, howling gales through the streets.
The spectrum of human emotion overlayed in a fashion that incites inquiry.
On the weekend of April 17th, Boyz II Them will DJ our first gigs of the year in Burlington, Vermont (April 17th) and Montreal, QC (April 18th). I’m excited to kick off the first of several touring gigs for adab and I. Even more excited to share a line up with Ayesha, one of New York’s treasures. Leveling the sets up this year, whilst providing our reliable approach to psychedelic, funky, energetic Black music.
